What Exactly Is a Digital Twin?
At its core, a digital twin is a virtual replica of a physical object, system, or process.
The concept of a digital twin dates back to NASA’s use of simulations to replicate spacecraft systems in the 1960s, allowing them to predict potential problems and prepare solutions. With today’s advanced computing power and IoT (Internet of Things), this has expanded to virtually every industry:

The phrase “the road to hell is paved with good intentions” captures the idea that well-meaning actions can have unintended negative consequences.
In the context of modern technology, this expression finds a powerful resonance in how digital twins and the vast amounts of data collected by big tech companies are used.
What begins as an effort to optimize services and improve user experiences can spiral into a concerning reality where tech giants create virtual versions of your consciousness, predicting behaviors and influencing decisions in ways that stretch beyond your control.
The Role of Digital Twins in Big Tech
Digital twins, as used in manufacturing and healthcare, are tools to simulate and optimize physical systems. However, in the digital world, companies like Google, Facebook (Meta), and Amazon use similar concepts to create virtual avatars of individual users based on the massive datasets they collect.
These datasets can then be used to predict behavior with increasing accuracy - what you buy, where you go, what kind of person you’d be friends with, etc.
MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF DATA
And, when I saw massive, I mean MASSIVE:
Facebook (Meta): According to a ProPublica investigation, Meta's ad-targeting system has data on over 52,000 data points per person. These data points can include everything from your browsing history and likes to specific behavioral data, such as political preferences, relationship status, and interests.
Google (Alphabet): Google's data collection is similarly massive, gathering information through services like Gmail, YouTube, and Google Maps.For an individual who heavily interacts with Google products, the total amount of data collected can easily reach gigabytes per month, depending on usage patterns. And when you think about the data collected, your head will spin:
Places you’ve searched in Google Maps, including specific locations and travel routes.
Apps used on Android devices, including app usage patterns and interactions.
Everything you’ve asked a Google device (e.g., Google Home or Nest), capturing voice commands.
Every video you’ve watched on YouTube, as well as your entire viewing history.
All YouTube comments left across channels and videos.
Gmail files, downloads, emails, including saved drafts.
Location tracking data, including date, time of day, travel duration, and time spent at each place.
Google Fit activity, such as steps taken, workouts, and durations of physical activities.
Data from connected apps, like Uber, Spotify, and Facebook Messenger, including who you chat with, when, and activity patterns.
Google Photos information, categorizing where and when photos were taken, and identifying people and objects within them.
Google Calendar events tracking, including all attended events and schedules.
Search history across all devices, even after being deleted locally, stored on a separate Google database.
Saved autofill information, such as passwords, credit card details, and purchase history.
Deleted files and data that remain stored within Google's systems unless explicitly removed from all linked devices.
As of 2015, Google already had 10 exabytes of data.
That’s 10 BILLION gigabytes.

Amazon: Amazon collects data on shopping habits, voice commands (through Alexa), and video streaming (through Prime Video), among other things. While specific metrics for Amazon are harder to quantify, a Reuters report noted that Amazon's advertising data troves are among the largest, pulling from tens of thousands of data points per user. Amazon's market share is expected to reach 50% by the end of 2024. In 2015, it had around 1 exabyte of purchase history data from their consumer base.
Based on an 18% annual growth rate in customer purchases, Amazon's estimated data in 2024 would be approximately 4.44 exabytes, assuming the average data per object is around 1 megabyte.
It may very well be more than that.
In additional to Alexa and Prime, Amazon’s data collection extends to connected devices like Echo speakers, Ring cameras, which track voice commands and home activity.
So, these companies have all this data. That much is clear. So what do they do?
Build a virtual twin of you.
This virtual twin of your behavior is built on everything from your search history, social media activity, and location data to your purchasing habits, emotional reactions, and even biometric data.
What Are Digital Twins of People?
In this context, a "digital twin" of a person is not a direct copy of your physical self but a detailed digital profile that predicts your actions, preferences, and future decisions. Big tech uses this to tailor experiences, influence your purchasing behavior, and even affect how information is presented to you. These digital twins, refined with AI and machine learning algorithms, grow more accurate over time, feeding on the data you unknowingly provide every second you interact with the digital world.
Predictive Behavior Modeling: Good Intentions Gone Awry?
While the primary goal is often to create personalized experiences (e.g., targeted advertising or content curation), the same data can be manipulated for more invasive purposes. Google and Meta (Facebook) use digital twins of their users to refine how advertisements are presented, not just based on historical behavior but also by predicting future decisions.
This involves algorithms learning how to predict when you're most likely to buy something, engage with content, or even how you’ll vote.
For instance, Cambridge Analytica infamously used data collected via Facebook to build detailed digital twins of voters during the 2016 U.S. election. These profiles were then used to predict and influence their voting behaviors. While not illegal, it raises concerns about the ethical implications of such use of personal data.
The Good Intentions of Personalization
From a business perspective, the goal of creating digital twins of users is framed as a way to improve experiences. When Amazon recommends products based on past purchases or Spotify creates a custom playlist, it’s offering convenience and relevance, aiming to enhance customer satisfaction. However, the same techniques that predict your next favorite song or perfect outfit can easily extend into more personal aspects, including your political leanings or health choices.
How Big Tech Builds Your Digital Twin
Data Collection: Every click, search, purchase, and movement you make online is recorded. Companies like Google and Facebook track your interactions, building massive datasets.
Pattern Recognition: Using AI and machine learning, these companies analyze patterns in your behavior—when you wake up, what websites you visit, and how long you linger on specific content.
Behavioral Prediction: Based on this pattern analysis, companies can predict your future actions. If, for example, you're regularly browsing vacation spots, you may soon be shown ads for travel deals and hotels. This behavior prediction can quickly become eerie when combined with the backdrop of all the other users it has information on. If Sally searched X,Y,Z and thought about buying a new house, then Pat, who is a lot like Sally (and also just searched X,Y,Z) is likely thinking about buying a new house too.
Essentially, with sufficient data, these Digital Twins allow companies to read your mind.Influence and Feedback Loops: Once the digital twin begins accurately predicting your behavior, big tech companies refine their strategies. Ads and content that match your profile are fed back into your digital environment, reinforcing the predictions and often leading to behavior modification.
Ethical Concerns and the Unintended Consequences
The increasing use of digital twins presents a number of ethical challenges. While the technology has the potential to improve our lives by offering personalized experiences, it also brings about unintended consequences that raise significant privacy, autonomy, and security concerns. The creation of a digital twin—a virtual version of yourself that can predict your behaviors, preferences, and even emotions—forces us to ask:
How is this data being used, and who controls it?
Best-Case-Scenario: A Helpful Digital Twin
Imagine a future where your data is used to create a digital twin to help you find a soulmate, a concept explored in Black Mirror's episode "Hang the DJ." SPOILER AHEAD:
In the episode, characters participate in a simulation designed to match them with their ideal partner by testing their compatibility in a virtual world. Each of their choices, preferences, and behaviors is tracked to determine their perfect match.
Now, consider a real-world example. Your digital twin is constantly learning from your data: your shopping habits, media consumption, health stats, and social interactions. Based on this, it might suggest helpful improvements to your life. For instance, if it notices that you’re consistently late for appointments, it might suggest optimizing your calendar by adjusting how long you allot for travel, or remind you to leave earlier based on real-time traffic. Or, it could help you maintain a healthier lifestyle by nudging you to take breaks and exercise when it recognizes that you’ve been sitting too long, based on your device’s data.
In this scenario, the technology genuinely improves your life by providing insightful, helpful recommendations tailored to your routine. It doesn’t intrude on your autonomy but rather works as an assistant in the background, offering advice to help you manage time, health, and other aspects of life.
However, as helpful as this sounds, the ethical concerns remain.
Who controls the data? What happens if you want to opt out? Even in this best-case-scenario use case, your freedom could be subtly influenced by technology.
Worst-Case Scenario: A Profit-Driven Digital Twin
Now, consider a darker possibility: a future where companies use digital twins not to help you, but to manipulate you into consuming more, prioritizing profit over consumer well-being. In this worst-case scenario, your digital twin is sold to advertisers or data brokers, used to predict and shape your behavior in ways that maximize profit for corporations.
Imagine a company (or collection of companies) that tracks every facet of your life—your shopping habits, entertainment preferences, and even intimate details of your emotions and mental state. It learns exactly when you are most vulnerable to making impulse purchases. Rather than using this information to offer helpful services, the company sends targeted ads and offers at precisely those moments.
In this dystopian scenario, the digital twin becomes a tool for behavioral control. It knows when you’re bored, anxious, or tired, and uses that knowledge to present "solutions"—new gadgets, fast food deliveries, or streaming subscriptions—designed to offer temporary satisfaction while locking you into an endless cycle of consumption. The twin is not your assistant; it’s the company’s most efficient salesperson. And worse, it might do this without your knowledge or consent.
Your digital twin could even influence decisions that shape your life in more profound ways. It might nudge you toward political opinions that align with advertisers or corporate sponsors. It might encourage lifestyle choices that benefit the platform more than they benefit you. In this scenario, your autonomy is eroded as companies, rather than you, steer your decision-making process. The twin ceases to be a reflection of you and becomes a tool for external forces to manipulate your desires.
But hey, companies would never put profit above a consumer. So no need to worry.
The Ethical Dilemma
In both the benign and worst-case scenarios, the ethical concern remains: Who is in control? In the first scenario, the digital twin can be genuinely helpful, but the potential for data misuse still exists. In the second, the digital twin represents a gross violation of autonomy, used to manipulate and profit from the consumer.
Ethical issues such as privacy, consent, and autonomy become central in these discussions. Companies, by nature, are primarily profit-driven. They will push the boundaries of ethical data use to achieve their goals.
Without strict regulation and transparent data policies, even well-intentioned technology could easily slide into harmful practices. The challenge lies in balancing the benefits of personalized technology with the responsibility of protecting individuals' rights to privacy and autonomy.
